Walks
The Medieval City
Find out why London is where it is and what life was like in London in the Middle Ages. See a section of the Roman Wall built nearly 2,000 years ago and find out why the Romans chose to build a City here – and why the first Medieval King, William I, built a great castle to keep an eye on the City. You will hear about the importance of the River Thames and the wealth and power generated by trading goods via the river, about a Medieval menagerie and about the devastation caused by the Great Fire of London in 1666. See Medieval alleyways and imagine a life of filth and squalor, with open sewers in the streets and daylight restricted by overhanging houses. And hear too about the splendour of Medieval churches and the comfortable life of the wealthy merchants. The walk will include commentary on London Bridge and the great institutions of Medieval life - churches and livery companies, finishing at the Medieval Guildhall.
