Bermondsey

Bermondsey has a history stretching back over a thousand years, people came on pilgrimage to Bermondsey Abbey. It was a place of fun and entertainment in the 1500s with its own Spa. It was the centre of the leather making trade in the 1600s and in the 19th and 20th Cs it was famous for brewing, biscuit making, food canning. Its wharfs and warehouses received grain, cotton, meat and much more from far flung places. It was known as the London's Larder. Bermondsey Council led the way for housing and health reforms in the mid 20C. Today its slums and warehouses have been transformed into chic apartments and arts venues. But some of old Bermondsey can still be seen.
